In report “Time & Synchronisation User Needs and Requirements,” European GNSS Agency recognizes Satelles’ Satellite Time and Location (STL) service as a viable backup to GNSS Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) for Critical Infrastructure operations. The report emphasizes “With the advent of new threats to GNSS (jamming and spoofing) and the increased importance of protecting critical infrastructure, resilience has become mandatory.”
Timing capability, as provided by GNSS, is at the core of most vital infrastructures: telecom networks operation, energy distribution, financial transactions. However, Cyberattacks on Critical Infrastructure are an increasing problem with GNSS at risk for these cyber security threats.
The report goes on to recognize Satelles STL as a current and available service providing PNT information through Iridium’s satellites at much greater signal strength than GNSS (300-2400 times the power), offering a resilient back-up to GNSS for critical national infrastructure. Link
