In a 19-Mar-2021 op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal, Diana Furchtgott-Roth — a former Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology at the U.S. Department of Transportation — addressed the importance of protecting GPS by presenting the case for why positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) is essential to safely and securely operate multiple types of critical infrastructure.
She highlighted a recent DOT report on alternative PNT technologies that was published by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (OST-R) based on an in-depth technology demonstration conducted while Ms. Furchtgott-Roth led the organization. The report concluded that “there are suitable, mature, and commercially available technologies to backup or complement the timing services provided by GPS.” STL from Satelles was a top-ranked wide-area PNT system for both timing and positioning, a fact that was stated in the new WSJ piece.
Ms. Furchtgott-Roth also gave a 17-Mar-2021 interview to the business and financial news outlet Cheddar in which she emphasized the criticality of safeguarding GPS with multiple forms of PNT.
